Lift Share – Read More

Yes it makes sense to share a lift if you know two or more of you are going to the same destination.

Sharing transport might be difficult because we often don’t know our neighbours well enough to realise if we could actually share lifts to work or school. Or we might not know how close some of our colleagues actually live to us. If it is possible to share lifts then there are some great advantages.

Advantages

  • Reduced congestion
  • Reduced pollution
  • Saved costs (costs shared)
  • Reduced greenhouse gas emissions
  • Build community spirit
  • Make new friends
  • Look out for each other

Disadvantages

  • Need to coordinate start and end times together (less flexibility)
  • Harder when there is illness
  • Could be stranded in the event of change of plans and no public transport alternative

Even if sharing a lift is done for one or two days a week, the advantages may still be strong

Sometimes lift sharing works as a one-off: sharing a taxi with a stranger from a railway station or airport. Even these impromptu sharing of lifts can reduce costs and number of journeys.

Another idea might be to find out if you can share a lift to church with someone who lives locally to you.

Or to coordinate a lift to the city centre for a shopping trip together with someone else if you are far from a bus route.
