Local Commute – Read More

Cycle Lane

These days it may be impractical to walk to work or even to cycle as an increasing number of people live a car journey away from their workplace. However the distance between home and school is often closer. If we live a short distance away from our school or workplace then it is easy to walk. What would be a reasonable distance or time for you to consider walking to a destination? What would that acceptable distance be if you cycled? Perhaps there are even low traffic routes you could use to get a little closer to nature while you walk or cycle? If it is still a little too far for an everyday walk or cycle, how about walking or cycling even just for one day a week?

A couple of years ago CAFOD (Caritas in the UK) promoted a ‘Walk for Water’ challenge for Lent. A means for raising money and getting fit at the same time. The challenge helped people explore their neighbourhoods and showed that even journeys we would never have contemplated walking before were possible and enjoyable. Walking from one side of a city to another, or walking out of the town to nearby villages, or discovering footpaths through areas we never even knew existed.

Why not add a long walk or cycle ride once or twice a week to your Lenten challenge this year? A closer connection to nature and a little more exercise? Part of your commute or school run, perhaps?
