A great idea for when the weather is dry is to use the power of the wind and the sun to line dry clothes.
The tumble dryer can be very useful in wet and cold weather but it uses a lot of energy to dry clothes. A full load could be using around 5 kWh of electricity to dry clothes (the most energy efficient models using heat pump technology may use just less than half this value). Compared to using free wind and solar power available on the washing line, we could all save by line drying clothes whenever possible. If you use a tumble dryer 3 times a week then your annual electricity cost for drying could be £193 (using 25.73p/kWh from the current UK price cap from ofgem and 150 drying cycles per year using 2250 kWh). Line drying only half of these instead of using the tumble dryer will give nearly £100 annual savings.
In terms of emissions, 2250 kWh is equivalent to 398 kg of carbon dioxide for standard UK grid electricity in 2025 (the current grid intensity for your electricity grid may be viewed on https://app.electricitymaps.com/map/). Reducing electricity usage helps cut down on emissions.
