Sunrise waking up nature

How close is the middle of your day to actual midday (when the sun is at its highest point or zenith?

In western societies we often get up quite late when it is already light and go to bed quite late when it has been dark for long. 7am is only 5 hours before midday but 10pm is 10 hours after midday.

Perhaps this idea is best illustrated with a graphic showing how much of our waking day is daylight. Here we use approximate sunrise and sunset values for UK midlands adjusted for daylight saving time. We can see that shifting the day by an hour replaces an hour of night throughout the year by an hour of daylight during spring, summer and the start of autumn.

Getting up earlier also is more aligned to nature and we can witness the wonders of creation (here we wake with the birds at Bridlington)
