We know that we are beginning to feel the effects of climate change. Some of the poorest communities are suffering today because of heat waves, storms and sea level rise. Climate Adaptation is making changes to our local environment and homes to reduce the damaging effects of climate change. For example we could build sea walls and levees to keep the sea and flooding rivers away from low-lying communities and farmland, just like has happened in Holland last century. The engineering to do this is available but the funding is not. Richer countries would have to help fund these schemes for the poorest countries.
Storm-proof houses would help resist the increases in storms. Solar-powered cooling could help in areas with heat waves. Not all climate adaptation needs to be new technology. Planting trees over a large area can also make improvements to the local climate, provide shade and improve biodiversity (better for wildlife).
