Batteries have improved massively in the last few years and there are still more advances that can be made. Cheaper batteries using fewer hard-to-find materials will make a big difference to how much we can use batteries for storing electricity around the world. What would be brilliant would be a breakthrough battery technology that is made from abundant materials and can store all that solar and wind power for when the clouds cover the sky or when the wind doesn’t blow.
A better battery would use easier to find materials, store more charge for its size, last longer and be completely recyclable. There is still a lot of research to do before we get a battery like this.
