Can we do anything about this?

Scientists tell us that if we can limit the earth’s temperature rise to 1 ½ °C then the climate stays similar to how it is today.

What is all the fuss about 2030?

We are still releasing record amounts of fossil carbon every year. It has been growing, even recently. But we need to turn that around. And we will have a good chance of limiting the rise to 1 ½ °C if we can be strongly reducing the levels of carbon dioxide by 2030. In the developed world that means many people switching to alternatives by 2030. That’s why 2030 is such an important date.

What is all the fuss about 2050?

By 2050 we need to be at net zero. That means we no longer release any extra carbon dioxide by that date. If there is anyone releasing fossil carbon dioxide then they will need to balance that with things that remove that same amount of carbon dioxide, like growing new trees for example.

Who needs to worry about all this?

We don’t need to worry – we just need to start caring! Our politicians and all who lead our society and businesses have the biggest part to play. They can make the biggest differences. There is even an important part to play by every adult. We call that “responsibility”. Children can help by asking questions.
