Why boil less?
- Uses less energy
- Quicker
- Cheaper
- Reduces greenhouse gas emissions
For an electric kettle, check that the element is covered with water. Some kettles have a minimum fill level. A smaller kettle may have a smaller minimum fill level and be better for fewer cups.
Why not have a look at our STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) activities involving boiling water? Cooking With Lids On are a series of three kitchen experiments looking at:
- Time and Energy saving when boiling something with a lid on (suitable for ages 7 upwards with parental supervision)
- Time and Energy saving if boiling water first in an electric kettle (suitable for ages 11 upwards with parental supervision)
- Cost and Emissions saving if boiling water first in an electric kettle (suitable for ages 14 upwards)
In addition, the Heat Loss and Insulation kitchen experiment looks at how effective insulation is at retaining the heat of a cup of tea! This is suitable for ages 7 upwards with parental supervision and the later parts are more challenging for those at secondary school.
