Most Sundays we watch and listen to a short presentation given usually by one of the children on an environmental theme that they are passionate about. Recently we had one with a twist.
My Environmental Raps and Photography, by Artur, Age 9
For my First Holy Communion last year my mum bought me a trip to photograph owls. I went with my camera and hid in a hide. It was very boring because I’m not a waiting guy. I went to the tree to talk to them. That didn’t work. The tree was too big to climb and it didn’t work.

I just had to wait. Then owl lady came out and she was curious about my camera (at least I think so). She was hard to spot because she was camoflaged very well.

This is what the owls eat. And they eat mice too.

I like writing environmental raps:
Owls don’t migrate
Did you know?
They stay in their places
Where they grow.
and
Snowy Owls go around the world to get
Rats, Mice, Hamsters, Rabbits, Alligators,
Yep, Yep, Yep, Yep, Oh ye, Oh ye, Oh ye.

Environmental Raps
There was an overwhelming response to the invitation to write and share their own rap. Here we feature some of the raps or poems composed at the event from young and old parishioners! Enjoy!
I love our garden
I sow seeds
But all that seems to grow is weeds
But that’s okay ‘cos it’s good for the bees
Veronica
Did you know the earth is round
Did you know the sun is round
Did you know your socks are round
Did you know your face is round
Did you know your eyes are round
Looks like everything is round.

Plants are green and
Green means life!
So let’s stay alive
By keeping the earth green.

In the light of the day
In the glorious month of May
It really seems so long
But where have all the blackbirds gone?
Where once there was growing grain
Now there is acid rain

Keep it Green people

It’s time to reduce heat

The sea is really my thing
So protect the fish it’s really just
a bling! If you don’t want to
do it…you’re a shark. But I just
wanna make my mark

Look after planet earth
It gave humanity birth
We need to keep it clean
But it’s not just coloured green
Look at a photo from space
The earth has a beautiful face
Coloured blue, green, yellow, and white
Sustained by solar light
Elliot
Let’s be green
Recycle your trash
Don’t be mean
Go on give it a bash.
Single use plastic is bad
Throw away fashion is sad
The planet will be mad
Let’s make the planet glad

Did you know,
The turtle won?
Did you know the hare was slow?

I was on the beach
I saw an owl
My mum said it was time to go home
It went away
It went back home

Did you know the Stars are bright
Did you know my tights are bright
Did you know my clothes are bright
Did you know I’m a bright

We should not cut many trees as we do
Every tree we cut we must replace
With planting more than we cut

Don’t be bitter,
Pick up your litter!

In the future there could be no more ducks;
So we should stop driving monster trucks;

Conclusion
This was our most successful event so far based on the enthusiasm and participation of so many parishioners. It seems like it struck a chord and many wanted to perform their creation in front of the others.
Why not try something like this in your own parish?
Or you can share your rap in the comments below…
